Meet KANKAN: A can-do approach to personal care…
When two friends were looking for ways to reduce plastic in their lives, they were dismayed to find how limited their choices were or the extent to which they had to compromise. With backgrounds in fashion and food, they decided to channel their love of quality products into finding a no-sacrifice solution for refills in the home. KANKAN, a Hackney-based start-up, was born.
Co-founded in 2019 by Eliza Flanagan and Mary McLeod, KANKAN aims to change how we use personal care products. It offers luxurious, natural washes (liquid soaps) packaged in aluminium refill cans. The brand’s ambition is to make refills more desirable and convenient, broadening their appeal and helping reduce the consumption of single-use plastics in the home.
The daily washes are packed with nourishing botanicals and essential oils. They are vegan friendly and are free from parabens, sulphates and sodium lauryl sulphates (SLS).
KANKAN has taken on board the basic principles of the circular economy: one that designs out waste and pollution, keeps products and materials in use and aims to regenerate natural systems. Its packaging is either returnable, reusable or recyclable – and it uses aluminium, the ultimate circular resource, as it is 100% recyclable and retains its properties indefinitely. Aluminium cans also have the advantage of being lightweight, durable and using very little material.
“Our aim is to trigger positive action in the world. By creating a new brand with a unique packaging idea, we hope that we can start conversations about single-use plastic and change behaviours that are out of date but still entrenched,” says Eliza Flanagan.
KANKAN encourages people to re-use dispensers they already have at home, while for those without they have a glass ‘forever bottle’.One tree is planted for every can sold and ecommerce packaging can be returned (free of charge) for reuse.
The company’s ambition is not only to be good but also to use its cans to do good: it is collaborating with artists on limited edition cans to raise money for grassroots, charitable initiatives that need exposure.
The co-founders hail originally from Australia and New Zealand, so perhaps it’s not surprising to learn they have ambitions to broaden the reach of KANKAN beyond the UK to a global market. For now, they are developing new products and packaging to continue with their ambition to make refills mainstream.
