Kaz discovers new kid on E13’s Green Street block, The Erstwhile Parrot

Those familiar with Upton Park’s famous (and, it has to be said, infamous) Green Street, know it’s not overflowing with places for a Damn Fine Cup of Coffee. Instead, it sparkles with Asian wedding shops (in fact, future brides from across Europe – and beyond – travel to East Shopping Centre to shop for the Big Day), and was the former home to West Ham United FC until the ground’s demolition in 2017. So, Green Street wouldn’t be on your Cool Places to Have a Coffee radar – until now.

Enter the recently opened Erstwhile Parrot, where you can wile away some time over a coffee and delicious, freshly prepared food in a warm and friendly atmosphere. It’s an oasis for coffee lovers and foodies alike, so it’s hardly surprising that it’s made quite an impression with the locals. The menu includes speciality coffee, loose-leaf teas (I can personally recommend the Lemon, Orange, Ginger & Thyme tea, a house specialty that is tasty, refreshing and healthy), cakes and pastries, light lunches and a changing menu of brunches at the weekend.

The cafe is furnished with cosy sofas and easy chairs, along with owner Anthony Attah‘s keen eye for detail – the cups and plates are as far from stark, generic white stoneware as you can imagine – creating a warm, comfortable vibe. An eclectic choice of background music is relaxing rather than overpowering so it’s the perfect place to have a natter, meet friends (the cafe is child and dog friendly, and there’s even a toy cupboard filled with books, puzzles and assorted kid-friendly things).

I had a Mediterranean Platter (pictured) that was reasonably priced at £7.50, generous in portion, and absolutely delicious. Lest we forget that this is a coffee house, the coffee is also very good, and in the summer months, iced coffees and fruit smoothies are on offer.

Lastly, the staff always have a friendly smile, are only too happy to help and are truly engaged with the community. As Anthony says, “this is just the beginning of a long-term project and we hope to be an integral part of the community for a long time to come.” This is a great place for a
