When was the last time you felt 100%? Ten energy boosting tricks from Michele Scarr

Modern life leaves us overwhelmed, exhausted and with little time or energy to take care of ourselves. We reach for sugar or coffee for an artificial boost that lasts ooh, 5 minutes, after which we crash and burn. Follow these Energy Boosting Tricks to put a spring back in your step!

Eat a nutrient rich diet
Eat nutritious food like protein and wholegrains (cut out those fluffy white foods: bread, pasta etc). Slow to break down, they fuel your body with a consistent source of energy throughout the day.

Don’t fruit bomb your snacks
We eat tons of fruit when we think of being healthy but fructose in fruit is difficult to break down, hangs around longer in the body and makes you lethargic. Stick to high water fruits like watermelon or blueberries.

Invest in Superfoods
Feel lousy and emotional? That’s your blood sugar going up and down like a yo-yo. Swap glucose for simple superfoods like apples, pears, berries, cabbage, onions, tomatoes.

Go Vitamin crazy
Vitamins help with physical tiredness as well as emotional exhaustion. To stop you feeling anxious, depressed or sleep deprived, stock up on B Vits, Magnesium, Vitamin E and C.

Swap energy drinks for invigorating herbs
Brace yourself, it’s time to ditch the coffee and Diet Coke. Instead invest in some Ashwaganda to relieve stress, balance hormones, stabilise blood sugar and reduce inflammation.

Drink Up
Your body is 60% water so dehydration will cause tiredness. Aim for 1.5-2L per day of FILTERED water. Hate the taste? Add cucumber, mint or orange and herbal teas count.

Get Moving
Ok so working out when low on energy is the last thing on your mind, but it’s the easiest way to skyrocket energy by speeding up blood and oxygen flow.

Follow the Sun
Sunshine Vitamin D, is crucial for pain, inflammation, blood sugar and more. Ideally get outside for 45mins a day and get your GP to test your levels.

Digital Detox
Instead of hunkering down glued to the phone or tablet, have a digital detox and re-energise yourself by seeing friends. I know, crazy.

Prioritise Sleep
Lack of sleep causes brain fog, impairs hormones and can lead to more serious health issues. This is when your body repairs so aim for 7hrs a night. Eat a banana or oats to induce calm, write down any worries to get them out your head and read a good book to induce shut eye.
